Packing & Storage Tips

  • Gather boxes from friends and local business' well before you plan on packing. We also sell boxes of all shapes and sizes, check with our manager. Make sure you have enough material before you start packing.
  • Try to get boxes that are the same size, it will make it easier to store them.
  • Write down a list of everything that you put in your storage unit and try to describe the location of the items in the unit.
  • Buy a plastic tarp and place it on the ground of your storage unit before you start to fill it with your items, sometimes condensation can occur.
  • If possible gather some 2X4’s and make a grid to raise your boxes off of the ground.
  • Make sure you plan out your storage packing, place any boxes that you might need to gain quick access to towards the front of the storage unit.
  • Never store anything combustible in the storage unit (Paints, gasoline, propane, etc…)
  • When packing the storage unit, try to leave an aisle down the middle for easier access later on, make sure you leave a few inches from the walls for air circulation.
  • Always place the heavier boxes on the bottom and the light boxes on top.
  • Make sure you obtain quality boxes that can hold at least 30lbs. Do not over fill the boxes.
  • List the inventory of each box on all four sides and seal them tightly with duct tape.
  • Glasses, dishes and other delicate items should be individually wrapped in newspaper before going into their boxes, make sure you stack them on top of all other boxes.
  • Mirrors and pictures should be sealed with cardboard and marked “fragile”, store them upright.
  • If you are storing any furniture with drawers, utilize the drawers for storage with smaller items, wrap them in towels or newspaper.
  • Large appliances such as ovens and dryers can be utilized as storage bins for clothes or blankets.
  • Place your electronics such as TV’s or computers towards the rear of the unit, pack them in first.
  • Common yard tools such as shovels or rakes can be stored in your trash cans.
  • Any furniture that can be broken down, such as removable legs on a table, should be taken apart to save on space.
  • Try to upright sofas that can be stored on end to save on space, wrap your cushions in plastic.
  • Try not to place any sharp or heavy objects on upholstered furniture.
  • Try to place blankets over any stuffed furniture items to limit dust build up.
  • When storing your mattress, make sure it is straight up and down; if you store it on an angle it can lose its shape and become lumpy.
  • Any important metal items such as lamps or bikes should be wiped down with machine oil or WD-40 to prevent rust.
