Tips for Storing Clothing

I come from the North where we have 4 different seasons and you need a wardrobe for each. Here in Florida it’s more like 2 seasons: Great-turn-off-the-a/c-and-open-the-windows and OMG!-will-this-heat-ever-end! Jeans and tee-shirts are a year round staple. Still there are some clothing items that we don’t need taking up precious closet space all year long. A self storage unit may be the best solution.
First decide on the type of unit you will need. If you are storing any expensive or delicate items such as leather of fur, you should consider a climate controlled unit.
Next check the items that you will be storing. Make sure they are laundered or dry cleaned, free of any stains and completely dry. Stains seem to love storage and can grow and become impossible to remove later. Any moisture can cause mildew.
Now, pack your items. Jeans, sweatshirts, tee -shirts, etc can be folded and packed in plastic storage boxes. Other items such as leather jackets and furs should be hung and stored in wardrobe boxes. Do not leave clothing in the plastic bags from the dry cleaners. They can cause yellowing and trap moisture.
Mark your boxes. This is especially true if you are storing items for a family. It will save you time and headaches later if you know which boxes have your son’s size 7 slim clothes if he goes a growth spurt and now is a 12 husky!
When it comes to insect control, use items that repel rather than kill. Natural items such as cedar or lavender will repel insects. Do not use items such as moth balls. Not only do they have a strong scent, they kill moths and the dead moths can attract other insects. Here at StoreRight Self Storage, we regularly clean and treat the grounds and common areas but we do not have access to your storage unit so check your unit on a regular basis.
