Self-Storage Works!

Long ago, in a land far, far away, the first self-storage tenant was born. Some 6,000 years ago residents of Xian, China were reported to have stored valuables in sealed clay pots buried in a public underground cavern while families traveled for various reasons. Hopefully when they returned, their items were still there and in good condition!

In the 1850’s, British banks were known to store valuables and furniture for clients in drayage lofts, amongst the hay, supplies and animals used to move goods throughout the counties. These lofts were open to workers and only the promise of retribution from the banks prevented theft and tampering.

Fortunately for us, today’s self-storage options offer solutions and advantages to not only keep what we have safe but also in good condition.  Self-Storage or Self-Service-Storage is historically noted as beginning in the United States in the late 1920’s, with Trachte Building System’s designing the concept after metal garages for “cars without homes”, (http://www.trachte.com/about/1920.php).  By the 1960’s, the first Self-Storage facility in Florida is reported as being in Ft. Lauderdale, and Floridians have been utilizing Self-Storage to keep their valuables dry and safe for over 50 years.  In fact, 10% of all Americans use some sort of Self-Storage, and according to Melissa Caceres of the Sun Sentinel, Florida ranks 3rd in the country for self-storage use. (http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2012-07-26/business/fl-self-storage-industry-20120726_1_storage-units-florida-self-storage-association-florida-ranks) This means that if you aren’t using self-storage – your neighbor probably is.

Why is Self-Storage so popular in Florida?  Florida tends to be a very transient state, with Tourism being our number one industry.  This number includes part-time residents, who use facilities such as StoreRight Self-Storage for keeping important paperwork, valueable furnishings boats, RV’s, even automobiles safe and sound.  With space here at a premium, Florida residents also use StoreRight Self-Storage for items homeowners might typically store in basements and attics, such as Christmas decorations, pool and patio equipment, or extra clothing to reduce the amount of items needed to travel with.  Full-time residents take advantage of the extra space for toy storage for visiting grandchildren, extra bedding and roll-aways for guest accomodation as well as valuables they may not want to keep in-home.  Local business owners use the additonal space for record keeping and supplies they may need easy access to but don’t have office space for.
