History of Father’s Day

In June of every year , we honor fathers.  The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1914, but the holiday for honoring fathers did not become official until 1966 !!  In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson declared that the third Sunday in June would be Father’s Day.  President Richard Nixon made this proclamation permanent in 1972.  But  this doesn’t mean that the holiday was not celebrated before this time.

The idea for Father’s Day is attributed to Sonora Dodd, who was raised by her father, after her mother’s death during childbirth.  While listening to a sermon at church on Mother’s Day,  she thought about all her father had done for her and her siblings and decided fathers should have a day , too.    Sonora’s father was born in June and she encouraged churches in her area,  Spokane, Washington to honor fathers that month.  The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane in 1910.

Over the years, the idea spread and people lobbied Congress to establish the holiday.  In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson,  who had signed a proclamation establishing Mother’s Day , approved the idea but never signed a proclamation for it.  In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to establish more intimate relationships between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations.

Other countries also picked up the idea of Father’s Day.  Many follow the United States and celebrate the third Sunday in June,  some decided to honor Dad on different dates.

By understanding the concept of Father’s Day , we can better celebrate and honor our Fathers !!

Happy Father’s Day to All !!

Manager’s Choice

StoreRight Self Storage has, in the past, always tried to keep the public informed on Self Storage tips, do’s and don’ts, storage history, etc. During this blog, our hope is to give you, our readers and potential tenants some insight so you can rent at the perfect storage for you. The information you are about to read will serve you as though you actually had a family memeber or best friend who is a self storage manager. In order to do this, StoreRight will get the facts from one of their managers, who will explain what they would look for if they, themslves, needed storage. This manager has over 14 years of experience in the self storage business and has seen many storage facility owners come and go. This has allowed the manager to learn new things about the storage business, discover what worked, and what did not work and much other great knowledge about self storage. This is how this storage manager would go about looking for and finding the perfect storage to store her own belongings.

First, if you know ahead of time that you need storage, do some homework. Go online and look up information on several storage facilities in the area you”ll be needing. Think about storage facilities you may have passed while driving to work or the grocery store. Which ones caught your eye? Make a note to check them out. Sometimes we need storage quickly and don’t have time to do any research. If that is your situation, then check with the storage facility that you notice every day during your commutes. If you noticed it, then must have been something about it that caught your eye. It’s called “curb appeal”. You may not think this is important when looking for storage but in reality, it tells you immediately that the persons managing that storage facility, not only care about how this facility looks, but it also means it is a well maintained facility with caring, helpful personell that take pride in their jobs. Once you have decided on 1 or 2 storage facilities, ask all the important questions – rates, specials, access hours, pest control, availability,  do they offer insurance and are locks provided? If you have chosen the correct storage facility, the manager will answer all these questions before you even get to ask them. You will be able to determine the knowledge of the facility manager by the help they offer you in deciding on a correct size unit, correct “special” for you, as well as, suggesting movers to assist you. A manager with sincere customer service skills will never waste your time. Moving and storing is a stressful time and a good manager will help ease that stress by being helpful, understanding, and accomodating to you, the customer.
