Use Self Storage to help with Spring Cleaning

The time of year has arrived when the days get longer and it is time to start your homes’ spring cleaning.  You may want to consider renting a self storage unit to get things out of the way during the process.  Cleaning and organizing can turn into redecorating.  Self storage facilities are great places to store items for the long or short term that do not fit into your updated home design or you just want to de-clutter and you are not ready to get rid of, sell or donate these items.  Cleaning up for some much needed space will put you in a better frame of mind and  can help to give you a new perspective on life  while giving your home a fresh spring feel.

Self storage can also help to get bulky out of season items, holiday decor and items that won’t fit back in the garage.  Reduce your stress by getting that storage unit before it is needed.  Then you can pack it according to how often items will need to come out.  Don’t wait to the last minute to go looking for the space.  Spring time is a very busy time and many self storage places sell out of many sizes and unit types.  If you wait to long to find a unit it could take a lot of calling and driving around to find the right size unit available.   It would be to your advantage to get a unit well before your spring cleaning starts so you have time to plan how to use the space.  You can make much more efficient use of the space if a timeline plan is made and put into place.  There is nothing worse than wasting your time digging through a storage unit for a box or item.

StoreRight Self Storage can help make your spring cleaning hassle free.  We still have many sizes available, both climate controlled and non climate .

Give us a call or stop by the facility , our  friendly staff will be happy to assist  you with all your storage needs !!

Spring Cleaning! Here are some tips from StoreRight Self Storage

Spring Cleaning and Storage

That time of year has arrived when the days get longer, and it becomes easier to do something about the carpet stains, dust and stale air that may have built up over the winter.  Here in Florida, we are enjoying that brief time period when we can throw open all of the windows and let in the fresh air!  Without needing the heat or the AC.

Whether you conduct a full-house cleaning once a year in the Spring, or you manage to do it both Spring and Fall; you may want to consider renting a self storage unit at StoreRight Self Storage to get things out of the way during the process. In addition, cleaning and organizing easily can turn into redecorating.  (that’s what always happens to me!)  StoreRight is a great places to store items for the long-term that do not fit into your updated home design scheme but that you are not ready to toss, sell or donate.

Spring Cleaning Tips

  1. To keep track of what you have already accomplished, clean from the top down, dusting and washing ceiling fans, light fixtures and corners first. Then wipe and wash walls, windows, counters, furniture and floors.
  2. A similar philosophy works with windows. Try cleaning the inside from left to right and the outside from the top down. This will make it easier to tell which side has streaks, if either.
  3. Replace smoke detector batteries, test the smoke detectors and give them a good wipe down.  At StoreRight, we test them monthly.  At home, I try to remember to check mine when we change the clocks.
  4. Clear counters and shelves and wash them thoroughly. Wash knick-knacks and dust books. If you have accumulated stacks of papers or bills, now is a good time to file the important documents in your self storage unit. Recycle junk mail, outdated magazines and used envelopes. Shred old bills and other papers that contain personal information.
  5. Pull out appliances and wash the sides and floor. Clean normally hidden spills and wipe the walls.
  6. If you plan to thoroughly shampoo the carpets, consider moving your furniture into a self storage unit.  We are running a Dollar Move-In Special, so you can rent a unit for cheap, cheap, cheap!
  7. When cleaning mattresses and other furniture, consider laying down a tarp and leaving the bedding and upholstery outside on the driveway for a few hours. Some strong sunlight and ultraviolet radiation can help eradicate microscopic creatures that are trying to take up residence there. A thorough steam cleaning may leave your furniture feeling and smelling fresh, also.
  8. Sort through seasonal clothes. Wash or dry clean them, and sew on buttons or stitch up minor tears. A wardrobe box with a hanging rod will help keep clothes looking good and can easily be placed into your storage unit. Remember to look critically at your garments. Get rid of overly worn garments and things you never wear.   In Citrus County, we have plenty of places to donate the clothes you never wear.  You can even leave them here at StoreRight, and I’ll make sure they find a good home.  I am involved in several local charities, including Cayla’s Coats,  Yard Sale for the Troops, Nature Coast Ministries.
  9. As you clean, you may find leaky faucets, broken door handles or cracked tiles. Take time to make these repairs now to prevent them from becoming more serious or costly problems later. Get seldom used tools out of the way when you are done with the repairs by placing them in your self storage unit.
  10. Remember the small stuff. Sweep the corners where you vacuum does not reach, wash down air vents, clean the dirt from the tracks in your windows and patio doors, and wipe crown molding and window frames. Put new filters in your AC.
  11. Don’t forget the outside of the house. Use a power sprayer to remove grime, empty wasps’ nests and spider webs from exterior walls and windows. Spray down the garage floor while you are at it to rid the space of fluid leaks and road salt or sand that can easily be tracked inside and stain your carpet.

Spring cleaning may be a lot of work, but the payoff is a brighter, safer home. That can give you a new perspective and prepare you to meet life’s other challenges.   At StoreRight Self Storage, we sell wardrobe boxes, tape, & other supplies to help you organize and de-clutter your house!   Why stumble over your Christmas holiday decorations at this time of year?   Put all of that in small storage unit here, and it will be less likely to get damaged as you keep shoving it out of the way  in your garage.    We are here to help you!  Self Storage is NOT just for moving households, it can make your day to day life less cluttered. Long Term Furniture Storage Tips

Great tips from Security Storage for long-term furniture storage:

From antiques that don’t quite fit your décor, to items you’re saving for your children, we can all gain quite the collection of furniture items over time. Instead of having these pieces take up valuable space in our homes, it may be time to move those in good condition to a home of their own before they overtake yours.
Self storage provides you with the room you need to keep the furniture you love, while you simultaneously remove clutter from your home. Below, we highlight four steps to successfully prepare and protect your furniture items for self storage.

1. Clean and Prep
Before you store, be sure to give each item a thorough clean. Begin by wiping down your pieces with a clean cloth. Then, use an appropriate cleaner for the type of material (metal, wood, glass, etc.), and wipe down once more for an added layer of protection.
As a final cleaning step, let the item breathe in a well-ventilated area and dry completely. This will ensure no patches of trapped moisture can reside on your item as you cover and pack the piece for storage. Patches of trapped moisture left alone can damage your item over time, and create marks of discoloration.

2. Disassemble for Easy Transport
For larger items, such as dressers, beds, tables, and couches, prep for smoother transportation. Take pieces apart before their trip to the storage unit.

Remove legs from tables and sofas, take out drawers from dressers and cushions from couches, and remove planks from bedframes. Group and wrap these pieces together to stay organized.

3. Cover and Protect
After you’ve prepped your furniture, protect it with the right materials. Bubble wrap can be useful to wrap items that easily break, such as framed pictures, mirrors, lamps or blunt parts like chairs and table legs.

As a general rule, avoid plastic package materials when possible, as it can suffocate certain materials like wood and fabrics. This can lead to condensation or unpleasant smells in your unit. Instead, use drop cloths or covers, sheets, or blankets to keep dust away and allow air to circulate.

4. Strategically Store
To maximize your unit’s space, you may be tempted to fit in as much as you can without a real plan. However, there can be consequences to sloppy storage.

An important tip to remember: leave space in between items.
The benefits are two-fold: you’ll allow air to flow freely between the furniture, which will help protect your items from damage; and you’ll reduce the risk of accidental damage to your pieces should you ever need remove them from your unit.

Save Space Without The Sacrifice
You don’t have to get rid of your furniture favorites due to lack of space. Now, you can realistically consider storage of larger items, even if you lack the space at home.

With the added benefit of climate control, these spaces will help maintain your furniture’s condition over time, versus storing it in a humid attic or damp basement.

By properly prepping your items for long-term storage, they will be ready for use upon removal, whenever you, or your family, may need them.
