The “Did you knows” I found about Self-Storage
Did you know?
Here are some things about self-storage that I did not know but I thought was interesting.
- Buz Victor founded the Self-Storage Association.
- It is recorded that in China, over for over six thousand years people have been storing items in clay pots in underground caves.
- Originally whoever was storing your item where in charge of its protection but no a day tenants are responsible for whatever happens to their item while being stored.
- In the early 1850’s a Martin Bekins, a son of a Dutch immigrant, notice the people migrating west and built the first Storage facility to house their valuables while they were building a settling their new places. He built his first steel and concrete reinforced building in Los Angeles, Ca. A very interesting side note to this is that in the big quake of 1906 his warehouse was one of the few structures that did not collapse.
- Tenants in active duty cannot be sent to auction.
- The United States has the largest number of Storage Facilities in the world. There are an estimated 58,500 storage facilities in the world with about 80% of them being located here in the United States.
- There is an estimated 2.3 billion square feet available for rent which, to put it in perspective, is about three times the size of Manhattan.
- The first storage facility using garage like doors was built in Odessa, Texas in 1964 , the facility was called “A1 U-Store-it, U-Lock-it, U-Take the Key”. Wow, that is one heck of a name!
- Over 21,000 new Storage facilities were built between 2000-2009.
Please note that all the information that I have put in this blog I have found on the internet and does have a chance of not being a 100% accurate.
