StoreRight Self Storage would like to share some facts on Presidents’ Day the American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February.
Traditionally celebrated on February 22nd, Washington’s actual date of birth. Following President Washington’s death in 1799, his February birthday became a yearly day of remembrance. At that time he was the most important figure in American history. In 1879 President Rutherford B. Hayes signed into law as a federal holiday. In 1885 it was expanded to the whole country and it joined four other nationally recognized federal bank holidays, Christmas , New Year’s , Thanksgiving and Independence Day.
Like independence Day, Presidents’ Day is traditionally viewed as a time of patriotic celebration and remembrance. It gained special meaning during difficulties of the ‘ Great Depression, when portraits of George Washington often graced the front pages of newspapers and magazines every February 22nd. In 1932 the date was used to reinstate the Purple Heart the military decoration originally created by George Washington to honor soldiers killed or wounded while serving in the armed forces.
In 1971 it was moved as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present. It is used by many patriotic and historical groups as a date for staging celebrations, reenactments and other events. A number of states also require that their public schools spend the days leading up to Presidents’ Day to teach students about the accomplishments of our presidents , often with a focus on Washington and Lincoln.
Along with George Washington , William Henry Harrison , Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan were born in February.

In honor of Martian Luther King Day, StoreRight Self Storage would like to share some interesting facts you may or not know about his life. Some or all may surprise you.
Dr. King delivered a version of his famous ” I Have A Dream ” speech at Detroit’s Cobo Hall on June 23, 1963. This speech took place more than two months before the March on Washington. In front of an estimated 25,000 people, King talked about his dream of having his four little children judged by others based on the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
Martin Luther King was actually born ” Michael King “. King’s father , who was also named Michael, reportedly changed both of their names to Martin Luther after a trip to Germany in 1931. The name change was never filed legally.
The ‘Mountaintop’ speech King gave the night before he was assassinated in 1968 almost didn’t happen. King was exhausted from his travels and had a slight fever. He planned to rest but was summoned to speak because so many had gathered at the Memphis church.
Dr. King was a fan of Star Trek. He personally convinced Nichelle Nichols to remain on the show as her character ‘Uhura’ after she had considered leaving just one season. Nichols met King at a NAACP fundraiser.
King entered Morehouse College at the age of 15. He graduated with a bachelors degree in sociology at 19. At 25 he completed his doctorate at Boston University.
Martin Luther King won a Grammy. In 1971, he earned music’s highest honor for Best Spoken Recording, “Why I Opposed the War in Vietnam”.
King’s assassination in 1968 was not the first attempt on his life. On September 20, 1958 a women named Izola Curry stabbed King at a book signing in Harlem. He nearly died from the incident.
Although Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, all 50 states didn’t officially recognize the holiday until 2000. Utah was the last state to make it official, renaming its ‘Human Rights Day’ holiday after King.
King’s ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail” was in part inspired by a newspaper article in the Birmingham News. The article quoted several white clergymen who thought King’s presence was ‘unwise and untimely.’ King responded famously from jail.
Dr. Martin Luther King’s life was full of many incredible experiences and speeches, he marched for equal rights, fair housing and decent wages for all.

The Special Equestrians of The Treasure Coast will have pizza and drinks for those that want to purchase. StoreRight in efforts to support the group will have a 50/50 drawing , half the proceeds taken will go the winning ticket drawn and the other half to The Special Equestrians . They foster personal achievement through equine assisted activities and therapy for individuals with special needs in a safe environment. Tips for packing and storing:
Identify items that will be packed in boxes and prioritize the boxes you will want to access on a frequent basis. Packing those boxes in the unit for easy access. You should also stack the boxes by weight, heavier boxes on the bottom. Boxes and containers should be of uniform size and label them. Be sure to note on your list how these boxes will be packed and organized.
When packing smaller items remember to fill boxes completely, stuffing any open spaces with paper to prevent collapsing when stacked.
Do not store anything combustible or perishable.
When storing lawn equipment drain any fluids prior to storage.
Cover mattresses and place on flat level surface.
Use protective covers on delicate heirlooms and furniture.

Hurricane season had officially started. It runs from June thru November. Those of us in the coastal areas knows that could mean as many as 25 or 30 big storms. Those storms have the potential to hit businesses , ruin homes and can cause serious damage to entire towns. The National Hurricane Center stresses the importance of early preparation. You probably already know that you should have an emergency plan. , if not here are some of the basic hurricane safety actions from the National Hurricane Center are:
Know if you live in an evacuation area. Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind. Have a written plan .
Keep a disaster supply kit containing : water, food, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit and battery-powered or hand crank radio ( for a complete list you can go to www ready.gov/basic-disaster-supplies-kit )
During the season monitor the tropics.
Monitor NOAA Weather Radio the official source for real-time weather information and warnings.
If the storm threatens, heed the advice for your local authorities. Evacuate if ordered.
Part of prepping for a hurricane is clearing stuff out of your yard. Where are you going to put it ? A garage is a good place but if you don’t have one or you have no more space in the garage, consider renting a storage unit for the season.
It will also provide a place to secure valuable and sentimental property . They can be useful to store everything from medicine supplies, emergency water and valuable paperwork. Remember computer files should be backed up.
