The “Did you knows” I found about Self-Storage

Did you know?

Here are some things about self-storage that I did not know but I thought was interesting.

  • Buz Victor founded the Self-Storage Association.
  • It is recorded that in China, over for over six thousand years people have been storing items in clay pots in underground caves.
  • Originally whoever was storing your item where in charge of its protection but no a day tenants are responsible for whatever happens to their item while being stored.
  • In the early 1850’s a Martin Bekins, a son of a Dutch immigrant, notice the people migrating west and built the first Storage facility to house their valuables while they were building a settling their new places. He built his first steel and concrete reinforced building in Los Angeles, Ca. A very interesting side note to this is that in the big quake of 1906 his warehouse was one of the few structures that did not collapse.
  • Tenants in active duty cannot be sent to auction.
  • The United States has the largest number of Storage Facilities in the world. There are an estimated 58,500 storage facilities in the world with about 80% of them being located here in the United States.
  • There is an estimated 2.3 billion square feet available for rent which, to put it in perspective, is about three times the size of Manhattan.
  • The first storage facility using garage like doors was built in Odessa, Texas in 1964 , the facility was called “A1 U-Store-it, U-Lock-it, U-Take the Key”. Wow, that is one heck of a name!
  • Over 21,000 new Storage facilities were built between 2000-2009.

Please note that all the information that I have put in this blog I have found on the internet and does have a chance of not being a 100% accurate.

Nothing like a good Self Storage Party !

Is there anyone that doesn’t enjoy a good party? Really—who does not want to relax for a few hours, let your figurative hair down, and have some fun? Certainly not anyone in the self storage industry (and yes the self storage industry does love a good party)!

The one question that many people often have when it comes to parties is the reason for throwing them. Some folks need a reason; some don’t. Either way it doesn’t hurt to have one, and coming up with one is something that people in the self storage industry are good at.

The good people at Access Self Storage in Lancaster, Texas, held a couple of parties, and they had a very good reason for doing so. Access Self Storage had been the setting for a recent episode of the A&E hit reality series Storage Wars: Texas. The episode was filmed back in August and aired a few weeks ago. To commemorate the event the company held a viewing party with the show projected on the wall of a local restaurant.

Like many self storage facilities, the good people at Access Self Storage took this as a chance to do more than just celebrate their personal success. The facility asked that people in attendance bring a toy to go to a child in need for Christmas. The company also pledged to donate $5 per toy as well to the Lancaster Outreach Center.

Of course it didn’t hurt that one of the personalities on the show, auctioneer Walt Cade, attended the party.

It is also not uncommon for self storage facilities to get involved in local, community parties. They are a great way for a facility to meet people in the community face to face and serve as an excellent marketing opportunity. When it involves going to certain events where good times are known to be had—like Oktober-fest—I doubt the facility has any trouble getting employees to go and represent the facility.

This past October the good people at Storage Post Self Storage in Yonkers, New York, had a booth at the Yonkers Community Garden October-Fest.

“Storage Post really encourages employees to take part in local events, which is why the Yonkers location partnered with the Greyston Foundation for the Community Garden October-Fest. We had a great time and enjoyed connecting with the community,” said Yonkers manager Kenneth McGuire .

When Selecting a Self-Storage Facility, StoreRight Brooksville

While surfing the web one day I ran across another article in which they describe what to look for when storing and how to pack your item for safe and effect storage. As I read it I thought it would be a nice idea to share the information with you then describe how StoreRight accommodates each situation. I hope the information is beneficial to you. I found the information at www.123movers.com

When Selecting a Self-Storage Facility

  • Think about location. Are you going to need to access your storage building frequently? If so, aim for someplace nearby.

StoreRight: StoreRight in Brooksville is in an excellent location right across the street from Wal-mart on highway 41.Just think how many times in a week you find yourself popping into Wal-mart for one thing or another, and we are right next door.

  • Consider how much space you really need. Self-storage facilities rent units in all different sizes. It’s best to opt for a smaller storage unit and pack it to the ceiling rather than pay for space you’re not using. If even the smallest storage units are too much, look into mini-storage facilities: self-storage facilities that specialize in small loads.

StoreRight: StoreRight in Brooksville has a wide variety of units from 5X5 all the way up to a 10X25 in climate and non-climate controlled units. Our staff is knowledgeable in helping you find what need to fit your items. We are also more than happy to open up as many units as you need to get a visual of how what and where you can store your items.

  • Be sure to ask facility representatives how and when you can access your unit. Most self-storage and mini-storage facilities allow for free access 24 hours a day, but some facilities have restrictions and others charge fees for access.

StoreRight: StoreRight in Brooksville gate hours are 6:00am to 10:00pm 7 days a week including weekends and holidays. We do offer 24 hour access free of charge upon request.

  • Also ask about climate controlled units. If you’re storing anything valuable or delicate – like antique furniture or important documents – it could be warped by being stored in space that’s too hot, too cold or too humid. For an extra cost, most public storage facilities can set you up with a unit where temperature and humidity are restricted.

StoreRight: In StoreRight of Brooksville’s general area we are 1 of only 2 facilities that offer climate controlled units. They too come in a variety of sizes at various prices. Quick tip for storing in non-climate controlled unit place a bucket of kitty litter in the unit to absorb some of the moister.

Self-Storage Works!

Long ago, in a land far, far away, the first self-storage tenant was born. Some 6,000 years ago residents of Xian, China were reported to have stored valuables in sealed clay pots buried in a public underground cavern while families traveled for various reasons. Hopefully when they returned, their items were still there and in good condition!

In the 1850’s, British banks were known to store valuables and furniture for clients in drayage lofts, amongst the hay, supplies and animals used to move goods throughout the counties. These lofts were open to workers and only the promise of retribution from the banks prevented theft and tampering.

Fortunately for us, today’s self-storage options offer solutions and advantages to not only keep what we have safe but also in good condition.  Self-Storage or Self-Service-Storage is historically noted as beginning in the United States in the late 1920’s, with Trachte Building System’s designing the concept after metal garages for “cars without homes”, (http://www.trachte.com/about/1920.php).  By the 1960’s, the first Self-Storage facility in Florida is reported as being in Ft. Lauderdale, and Floridians have been utilizing Self-Storage to keep their valuables dry and safe for over 50 years.  In fact, 10% of all Americans use some sort of Self-Storage, and according to Melissa Caceres of the Sun Sentinel, Florida ranks 3rd in the country for self-storage use. (http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2012-07-26/business/fl-self-storage-industry-20120726_1_storage-units-florida-self-storage-association-florida-ranks) This means that if you aren’t using self-storage – your neighbor probably is.

Why is Self-Storage so popular in Florida?  Florida tends to be a very transient state, with Tourism being our number one industry.  This number includes part-time residents, who use facilities such as StoreRight Self-Storage for keeping important paperwork, valueable furnishings boats, RV’s, even automobiles safe and sound.  With space here at a premium, Florida residents also use StoreRight Self-Storage for items homeowners might typically store in basements and attics, such as Christmas decorations, pool and patio equipment, or extra clothing to reduce the amount of items needed to travel with.  Full-time residents take advantage of the extra space for toy storage for visiting grandchildren, extra bedding and roll-aways for guest accomodation as well as valuables they may not want to keep in-home.  Local business owners use the additonal space for record keeping and supplies they may need easy access to but don’t have office space for.

What are the advantages of using StoreRight Self-Storage?

StoreRight Self-Storage Presents

An article we found on rayselfstorage.com.

In life, people who work and enjoy collecting things eventually accumulate a lot of personal stuff as years go by. They may not be aware of how much items they already have in their possession and find out about it only later when they can’t find an extra space in their home wherein to store their personal stuff.

Thankfully, there are self-storage facilities in existence today that can help people facing this kind of problem. Not all people, though, know about this but these facilities are really helpful. They can be used not only by private individuals but even by small business organizations. In other words, anybody needing storage space can take advantage of this facility.

Let’s take several examples. People living in apartments normally have limited space for their personal possessions. Sometimes, there may be no extra parking area for cars or for their numerous home decors.

Small businesses are also prone to facing this problem especially those that occupy only a limited area of office space. When their new stocks arrive, they may need additional space wherein to store them. In both situations then, self-storage facilities are very beneficial.

This is a great example of the types of people that can benefit from storage. We here at StoreRight can accommodate all these people and are happy to do so. Are units come in a variety of sizes that range from the ability to store a couple totes to an entire vehicle. We also have climate and non-climate controlled units for those who have treasured possession that need a little extra protection.

All of the units at StoreRight are safely behind a gate that only opens with your special code. There are also several security camera’s keeping an extra eye on your treasures while we are not on the property. We are in the office Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9:00am to 2:00pm. The gate can be accessed 7 days a week all year long from 6:00am to 10:00pm.

Call StoreRight today and our friendly and knowledgeable staff will help you find the perfect storage unit to fit your needs.
