Holiday Decorating Season

Decorating season is upon us and over the next couple of months we’ll be changing our decor several times putting up the ghosts and pumpkins, changing that out for Pilgrims and turkeys and then Santa Claus and Christmas trees. That’s a lot of stuff to be circulating through your home in a relatively short period of time but with a little thought and planning you’ll save yourself and aggravation.
Decide what decorations go where and group them together. Keep your outdoor decorations with other outdoor pieces and indoor pieces with other indoor pieces. As you pack them away. make sure to label the containers (Halloween lawn decorations, Thanksgiving kitchen decorations, etc).
Wrap breakables. Using bubble wrap not only protects your items but it can be used and reused and it’s clear so you can see what’s inside.
Choose the right container for your items. It may be tempting to get one big box and put everything in it but if the box is too big, items can shift and break. Consider investing in plastic storage totes that protect from moisture and don’t provide a food source for all those nasty creepy crawlies this climate seems to attract. These often are sold in colors around the holiday season (orange and black at Halloween, red and green at Christmas) to help you find the right totes.
Never store edibles! That candy cane wreath may look pretty but after a year in storage the thrill will be long gone and, while the bugs and critters may thank you, no one else will.
Once you get the containers to your storage unit, try to keep all the Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving boxes together. It will save time next year if you can grab all the boxes for each holiday at once and you won’t have to hunt around for stray packages. Since you won’t need these for another year, you can store the holiday items in a corner or along the back wall so you won’t have to shift them around when you are getting more frequently used items.

Packing Tips from StoreRight Self Storage Lecanto

moving_tips_banner

No one likes to move, right? Here’s a few tips to make things easier:

1. Pack a tote bag.

This way you can keep essentials with you at all times. In the bag, pack: any prescription medicines you take on a regular basis, plus maybe some type of over the counter headache/muscle ache pain reliever!!!

Also include toiletries such as your toothbrush, deoderant, etc…That way you know where that stuff is.

A phone charger is important! You don’t want a dead phone, while you’re in the middle of a move.

If you have kids, the tote bag is a good place to stash a few non-perishable snacks, plus a change of clothes, maybe a special new toy.

If you don’t keep your contacts on your cell phone, make sure you have a list of important numbers with you in the tote, like your kids’ pediatrician’s phone number, your moving company’s phone number, the electric company’s phone number, StoreRight Self Storage Lecanto 352-527-9777, pizza delivery number, etc.

2. Set up an “Open First” box.

Seriously, this is a lifesaver. Keep this box handy to OPEN FIRST. Include toilet paper & hand soap for your new bathroom, box cutter, paper towels, trash bags, eating utensils, power strips, phone chargers, flashlight, first aid kit, bottle of wine, corkscrew, etc. corkscrew

3. When you’re packing all your stuff.

Ahead of time, if you can, try to purge. Moving is a great time to donate items to charity. And the less stuff you move, the less stuff you have to unpack!

Use the right size boxes. Put heavy items, like books, in small boxes; light items, like linens and pillows, in bigger ones.

Don’t leave empty spaces in the boxes. Fill in gaps with clothing, towels, or packing paper. We sell packing paper at StoreRight Self Storage Lecanto. It works great and no stained fingers, like with newspaper.

Label each box with the room it’s destined for and a description of its contents. Do not label anything miscellaneous!

Tape boxes well. Use a couple of pieces of tape to close the bottom and top seams, then use one of the movers’ techniques―making a couple of wraps all the way around the box’s top and bottom edges, where stress is concentrated.

Don’t skimp on the tape. No point being skimpy with the tape because you won’t save money if you end up with broken stuff. Buy enough tape at StoreRight Self Storage Lecanto.

Besides, if you have any leftover packing tape, you can use it to wrap gifts! It will be hilarious watching the recipient try to open the gift!

Making The Most Of Your Storage Experience

If you are going to rent a self storage unit, here are some tips to make the most of your space and keep your belongings safe from selfstoragefinders.com:
Keeping Pests Out Of Your Unit
Place baits and traps in you unit. You can also use dryer sheets in corners and in your boxes (these should be replaced about once a month). Here at StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville we do our best to maintain a pest free environment, all units are cleaned and treated prior to renting and all common areas are treated on a regular basis but once your unit is rented we are unable to access you unit, of course.
* Eliminate Moisture
Unless you are have a climate controlled unit, use plastic storage boxes with air tight lids instead of cardboard, allow space for ventilation around your items, use wooden pallets to keep items off concrete floor, place charcoal in a pie pan in you unit to help absorb moisture and odors and is you are storing appliances that normally use water ( washing machines, dish washers, etc), make sure to wipe out the inside with baking soda before you store them.
* To Prevent Dust and Dirt Buildup
Cover mattresses and box springs with mattress covers or two fitted sheets, use furniture covers to protect any items with fabric, coat wooden items with furniture polish to help keep dirt and dust off and treat metal items (tools, bicycles, etc ) with lubricant to help prevent rust.
* Avoid Damage
Use bubble wrap to protect fragile items. make sure to fill boxes to prevent items from shifting, label boxes containing fragile items and store them last to prevent heavier boxes being placed on top of them.
* Maximize Space
Store small items on bookshelves or shelving units, when storing dressers, store items in the drawers, disassemble beds and tables and tape sandwich bags with the screws and small parts to the piece, and vacuum seal clothing, bedding, linens, etc.
* Easy Access
Leave an aisle in your unit to prevent having to move stacks of boxes to get to one item, label each box with key items inside, place furniture sliders under heavy pieces, and make an inventory of the contents of your unit.

With a little pre- planning your storage experience will be pleasant and stress free.

What is Climate Controlled Storage and Do I Need It?

It’s a beautiful mid-August morning here at StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville, Florida, the sky is blue with puffy white clouds, the temperature is 87 degrees and  humidity is 72%. Translated it’s HOT and HUMID AND we’re still hours away from the hottest part of the day.

Our lives here at StoreRight Brooksville depend on air conditioning in our homes, cars, shopping centers and offices. But what about our storage units?

A climate controlled unit is designed to keep the temperature and humidity levels below that of the outside world at this time of year but it is not set like your home a/c unit at a nippy 66 degrees. So, do you need climate controlled storage?

This, of course, depends on what you are storing. Many items such as lawn furniture and garden equipment being designed for outdoor use certainly do not need to be stored in a climate controlled unit. On the other end of the spectrum, expensive leather furniture and electronic equipment do. So, think carefully about what you are storing and weigh the cost options. A 10 foot X 10 foot climate controlled unit may cost 40% more than the same size  standard unit. It may make more sense  financially to rent two smaller units than to rent one climate controlled unit.

At StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville we make every effort to maintain our grounds, buildings and equipment; however, air conditioners like all mechanical equipment are subject to break down and failures. visit your unit from time to time and report any problems you may find to the office We also recommend that you protect yourself by insuring the contents if your unit and never store irreplaceable heirlooms or antiques.

Happy Summer!!!

We are in full swing of summer, in Florida that means hurricane season. I like to remind my customers that anything can happen in a moments notice. Storms can go from cat 1 to cat 4 overnight. Take the time and spent the few extra dollars to protect what you have.

When Was The Last Time You checked Your Storage Unit?

I’m as guilty as anyone, you put your things in storage and you have every intention of checking on it regularly but something always comes up and months go by (or maybe years) and you have no idea what’s going on in your unit. Well, neither do we!
Once you move into and lock your unit there’s no telling what’s going on in there. Here in Florida we get RAIN this time of year and even the best maintained buildings can spring a leak or have an invasion of creepy crawlers! We do our best to see to it that the buildings and roofs are kept in good repair and that all the common areas are sprayed regularly but we need your help! please check your unit and let us know if there are any issues that need to be addressed. Together we can keep a small issue from becoming a major one.
