Make a Smooth Move! StoreRight Self Storage in Lecanto Can Help!

Since I have been working at StoreRight Self Storage in Lecanto, I’ve heard lots of stories about some of the headaches that can be involved with moving. I’ve also moved multiple times myself, there was a period of time when I was younger during which I moved every two years for about 12 years, that was ALOT of moving! So, based on my own experience, as well as my tenants experience; here are some tips to make your move go more smoothly.

First: the more organized you are at the beginning of the move; the easier it will be on the other end. Even if you’re in a hurry; just take a few more minutes to label everything, and pack your stuff as well as you can.

You will NOT remember where your coffee maker is; if you have 12 boxes called “Kitchen”. Don’t label anything “miscellaneous” either. You’ll be kicking yourself later on when you’re looking for your computer mouse or your checkbook, and it’s just buried somewhere in one of your “miscellaneous” boxes. At least call that box: “Office” or “Desk Stuff”, but better yet, be more specific and write down what’s actually in the box.

Before you move: put everyone’s number in your cel phone, your moving company, or your truck rental office if you’re renting a truck and moving yourself, your storage facility’s number. You don’t want to be relying on scraps of paper that you can easily misplace. Also, keep your cel phone charger with you, don’t pack it in one of those “miscellaneous” boxes. You don’t want to get stuck with a dead phone.

If you are travelling with pets: make sure you have your vet records with you, specially if you’re moving cross country with pets. You never know what may happen, and if you have to kennel your animals: most reputable kennels will require written records of shots, rabies, kennel cough, etc….so you want those records handy, you do NOT want them in a box on the moving truck, or stacked at the very back of a storage unit.

Before you move, remember to return all library books, Redbox dvd’s, the casserole dish from the next door neighbor, the chainsaw from your brother in law, etc….you don’t want to pack a dvd that’s not yours, and then end up not finding it for 2 months, and then end up with a bunch of unwanted charges on your credit card.

Also, remember to get any drycleaning out of the cleaners. You don’t want to end up paying for the drycleaners to ship something to you, cause shipping is expensive! Be organized ahead of time and save yourself $$$.

Toll Passes. If you have a transponder for local tolls, make sure you do whatever you need to do to de-activate it. Sometimes you’re required to turn those in. Do it before you move, so you don’t have to worry about it. You don’t want that sort of loose end. It’s just one more thing that will cause you a headache if you don’t take care of it before you move.

Garage Door Opener—if you have one in your car, make sure you bring it in the house. It’s not going to do you any good at your new house, and it will be much less of a hassle for the new people. Try and remember it’s like a house key. Give all keys and the garage door opener to the new homeowners. Or ask your Realtor for advice.

Houseplants: do NOT pack them without labels. I made this mistake myself and it turned out both good & bad. In a hurry, I actually packed a few houseplants in regular moving boxes, and did NOT label them. Of course, those boxes ended up being unpacked last….they sat for weeks in a spare bedroom. Well, two of them didn’t make it, which was a shame because they had been gifts which were very special to me, as they marked a special occasion. However, I had a Christmas cactus which apparently really enjoyed being in the dark for a month with no water because it was thriving & blooming! But that was just a lucky accident. If you’re planning on having your belongings on a truck for any length of time or in a storage unit; you might be better off just giving your plants away to friends and neighbors. We can’t store live plants at StoreRight Self Storage.

Once you get to the new house, don’t be afraid to ask for advice! Specially if you are moving to another city or state. We don’t really have the Welcome Wagon program anymore; but go ahead and ask people you meet for their recommendations. It’s daunting to move and not have any idea where to even get a good pizza! Here at StoreRight Self Storage in Lecanto; we always try to help. We can tell you where to get your new drivers liscense, where the good restaurants are, where to buy furniture, where the hardware store is (both the big box stores & the local smaller Mom & Pops), where to take your grandchildren for a fun day, etc….just feel free to ask us! We try to make your transition to your new home as smooth as possible! StoreRight Self Storage, Right Place! Right Price!

Ain’t Love Grand and Other Storage Issues

We’ve all been there. Your best friend, adult child or the new love of you life is having problems. You want to jump with both feet and help. And that’s a good thing, I’ve met some of the kindest people since moving to Brooksville, FL 12 years ago, But, unfortunately, sometimes their kindness comes back to bite them on the butt.
You best friend since grade school is in a bad relationship and needs to get out. You offer your guest room or your couch but where do you put their stuff? Or your baby has a brand new college degree and is moving home until he lands his new job and finds an apartment but what about all the things from his college pad? You think you’ve found “The One” so you decide to make two homes one but now you have two of everything but only room for half of everything; where’s it all going to go?

That’s right! StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville! It’s the right place at the right price! It says so right on the sign! And we are !

There’s just one little issue you should consider before renting a unit for someone else. Once your name is on the lease, the financial responsibility for the unit’s rent is yours regardless of who owns the contents.

If your BFF finds new love and rarely returns your calls, your 30 year old baby spends his days playing video games waiting for the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation to knock on you door with an amazing offer and your shiny new love has tarnished big time just remember you will always have that nagging rent bill to hold you together (I’ll chase you and you get to chase them for the rent).

The more practical solution is to avoid the situation in the first place. Yes, StoreRight Self Storage is likely still the best solution but bring your BFF, adult child or new love with you. Rent the storage unit in their name (we will need them to supply their photo ID and sign the lease). This way the financial obligation remains with the owner of the contents and never has to become a sore spot in your relationship. If there is money issue, you can always make a payment on the unit without being obligated to do so. And, as an added bonus, you will be eligible for a $25.00 “Refer a Friend” Visa gift card! Win-win!

Moving and Your Fur-Family

For many of our customers, self storage is part of their moving experience. Our tenants are often relocating and are storing their belongings with us while they are staying with friends, family or in a temporary rental. This can all be very stressful even though you know it’s only temporary. But what about your pets?
Recently a new tenant expressed concern that his four, normally well behaved dogs were acting differently. They were panting excessively which our tenant thought was a reaction to the summer heat her in Brooksville so he cranked up the a/c. When he had to leave them at a relative’s home while he was here with the movers, they had a toileting accident in the house. The poor man was beside himself! But when we looked at these behaviors it was more likely that the panting was due to anxiety than heat (since the dogs were in an air conditioned environment already) and the toileting accident due to being in a strange home with an unfamiliar person.
So how do you explain to your four-footed children that their big comfy couch isn’t gone, it’s just sitting in your storage unit until your new house is ready? And all these strange sights, sounds, smells and people are only temporary? Obviously you can’t but there are things you can do to help ease the transition.
As much as is possible, keep your pet’s bedding and toys with them. These familiar scents can help reassure your pet that the whole world hasn’t gone completely haywire.
Likewise, keeping to their routine as closely as possible should prove comforting. As would extra attention, cuddle time and playtime Now, however, would probably not be the best time to change your pet’s diet.
We at StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville love our furbabies and love when we get to meet yours but please be careful! We are located on a very busy street and the strange sights and sounds can startle your pet so please keep them on a leash. Also there is very limited grassy space and the blacktop gets HOT! Walking your pet on it can cause burns to their feet. If you plan to leave your pet in your car, you will need to leave the air conditioner running. There is almost no shade in the parking areas and it takes only a very few minutes for your car to become dangerously hot. And, of course, please pick up after your pet.

Hurricane Season and Self Storage

Nothing can be more devastating than a hurricane taking it’s toll on your roof and home.  Possibly damaging memories and valuables.  Keep your items safe this hurricane season by using Self Storage.  This can save you heart break and financial strain of having to replace your items.  This can give you extra space in home that would otherwise interfere during a hurricane.  For example : Garage items; bikes and yard objects that take up space .  Placing these items in storage allows you to park your car safely in the garage.  Here are some suggestions on what to put in storage.  Patio, lawn furniture, gardening tools, or any out door decorations that could possibly become a projectile during a storm.   Another suggestion to clean a room in the house to take shelter from the storm.   Here is a list of  items commonly stored during the hurricane season;

Holiday decorations, Boats and RVs, sporting and camping equipment, pool toys , children’s toys, trampolines, barbecue grills, motorcycles and spare automobiles.

Many Floridians use storage units for daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal .  This helps keep housing costs low and gives you a chance to organize.

StoreRight Self Storage can help with any of your needs ! Seasonal use or monthly ! Visit  www.storeright.com or stop by any of our locations .

Hot & Humid & Storage

It’s July here in Brooksville, FL and it comes as no surprise to anyone who has spent any time here, it’s hot and humid! It has been for the past few months and will likely be for the next couple. We spend our lives dashing from one air conditioned space to another just waiting for the first “cold front” to come through!
So, what does all this mean for your storage unit? Well, if you are in a climate controlled unit, probably nothing. You are doing the best you can to protect your belongings.
On the other hand if you are using a standard storage unit there are a few things you can do that can help. If space is available and the cost is within your budget, you can transfer to a climate controlled unit. Depending on the size of your unit, you can expect to pay an additional $15 to $65 per month or more for a like sized unit here at StoreRight in Brooksville. The climate controlled units tend to fill up faster so availability may also be a factor. And, of course, you will have to move your belongings from one unit to the other in this heat!
If transferring your belongings is not within the realm of possibilities, there are other steps you can take to protect your belongings. First, make sure everything you put in the unit is completely dry before it goes into the unit. This is especially important for things like washers, dish washers, outdoor equipment and clothes.
Next inspect the inside of your unit for any sign of leaks. We at the Brooksville StoreRight office inspect the exteriors and common areas regularly but we can not see what is going on inside. If you find any problems, please report it to the office.
Cover furniture with blankets or moving pads not plastic which will hold the moisture against the furniture.
And you can also put kitty litter and charcoal in your unit to help absorb moisture and odors. Place the inexpensive clay type cat litter and charcoal in pie pans (the aluminum foil ones from the dolor store work fine for this) and place these throughout the unit. Make sure you don’t use the “easy light” charcoal which has lighter fluid in it and don’t put the charcoal pans close to anything that can be stained by it. The kitty litter should be changed every few weeks; the charcoal every month or two.
With a little extra care during the long, hot summer, your belongings should survive.

Hurricane Season Is Here! Check Your Coverage!

June brings summer weather, vacations and hurricane season! Now is a good time to check your insurance policies to make sure you have adequate coverage to protect your stored items.

Here at StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville, we make every effort to keep our buildings in the best condition possible to keep your belongings protected but there’s nothing like the wrath of Mother Nature to teach us all a lesson in who’s boss.

So for your own peace of mind, make sure you have an up to date inventory of your stored items and their current value (pictures and receipts are excellent in case you ever need to make a claim) . Compare this to your coverage limits. If you need to increase your coverage, now would be a good time.

Consider Depreciation When Considering Self Storage

There are many reasons why people decide to rent a self storage unit. HERE AT StoreRight Self Storage in Brooksville, Fl our tenants have almost as many reasons why as we have tenants. People moving from point A to point B but Point B isn’t quite ready; home repair/remodeling when you need to have things out of the way while work progresses; business or personal records that need to be kept safe but not necessarily right at hand; and even long distance truckers who need a home for their belongings but not for themselves. Most common, however, seems to be that people have more stuff than space,
At StoreRight Brooksville we want your business,. We do our best to provide clean, safe and affordable storage units. But most importantly we want our tenants to be happy.
One thing that many people forget to consider when deciding on long term storage is depreciation. At $120.00 a month (roughly the current cost of a mid-sized, non-climate controlled unit) in a year’s time you will have paid over $1400.00 in storage fees. In 2 years, you are approaching $3000.00, 5 years nearly $9000. So you need to consider what it would cost to replace your items before paying years of rental fees if you might not be better off selling or donating your items now and buying new ones when the time is right.
