When operating a storage facility it’s important to have a positive relationship with your local police department and especially today with the recent tragedies on both sides of the law. If your facility is located in a large city, this can be a big advantage for your self storage business. You might have a tenant issue or you have witness a crime in your area . Building a relationship let’s them know that you care and you’re doing your part in the community. The people that serve the community are also our customers. I once had an officer chase down an individual that had damaged our gate. He didn’t have to do that , but he did ! I would like to share some Memorial Day facts and thoughtful insights . Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of Summer in the United States, It is a weekend of family events and often associated with hot dogs and picnics. The opening of pools is often done on this day. Many people forget the reason for the holiday.
Here are some interesting facts : Memorial Day started as Decoration Day, May 5th 1868. Soldiers and family would decorate gravestones of those who died in the Civil War. Over 620,000 died on both sides of the war. It expanded later to recognize all soldiers in all wars who gave their lives in conflict. Some Southern states celebrate a separate day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers.
James Garfield the Ohio congressman and future President gave the first speech at the Arlington National Cemetery.
Several towns claim to have started Memorial Day such as Boalsburg, PA and Carbondale IL. However Waterloo, New York was recognized by Congress as the official town.
Every grave in Arlington National Cemetery will have a flag for the Holiday.
Fun fact: Americans will eat 818 hot dogs per second or 71 million in a day ! Los Angeles consumes more than any other city in the United States.

StoreRight Self Storage in honor of Black History Month has learned some interesting facts regarding a descendant of slavery from our area. George Pretty was his name and he lived in Gifford. Pretty was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania a free man. His father was also born free, but his maternal and paternal grandfathers were born slaves in the southern part of Pennsylvania.
Growing up in Pennsylvania they made there own soap, cured hides of cows and maked dye. When his mother would give birth, she would simply go upstairs in their house and disappear for a month or more. The father would tell the children that she had gone to New York or Buffalo to visit family. The term “broke her leg” was used to describe someone who was pregnant.
According to George , he was knowledgeable about nature. He was often called upon to cure ailments with herbs or roots from his homeland and in Florida. His first trip to Florida was in 1893 with a white man who was his employer. He did not remain with him and move on to farm at Palatka, which is where he was interviewed for the narrative in ” A Folk History of Slavery in the United States.” He moved to Gifford in the early 1930s and died in 1938. He is buried in Fort Pierce.

It’s November and the Holidays are approaching. It is definitly a special time of the year. And with Thanksgiving coming up this month it is the time to give thanks. Here at StoreRight Self Storage of Vero Beach we would like to mention that we have had such a great year. Having so many loyal and special customers, we feel very blessed . We appreciate them and are so pleased that they have chosen StoreRight for their storage needs.
